Letters from Iwo Jima is a great movie.
I think the message Clint Eastwood (old chap.) is trying to send out to the audience is that not all the Japanese who took part in the war wanted to fight for their country, and not all of them are evil and like to torture the POWs. Similarly, it is also trying to say that the Americans, though dubbed the 'saviours' of the world in WWII, were not entirely good-hearted and kind (as thought by the Japanese soldiers who surrendered to the Americans).
Actually there are a lot of media that tries to portray different perspectives of the war from different types of people. If you are a Fort Minor fan, you may have come across this song named "Kenji". It is one song that depicts the story of a Japanese living in America during the war period.
Go listen.
